[edit] Assessment of current materials

  • summary of materials
  • Dixon 2/29: I assigned homework problems covering material that would be discussed on the assignments due date. Students found this very stressful. I decided to change from this assignment/lecture sequence to one that is more practical. I will give the students assignment that have two categories of problems. One is a category of easier problems, called You-Did-Them problems (YDTs), that are simply checked by the grader to assess whether or not the student faithfully attempted the problems in the category. The YDTs help focus the student's attention in the assigned reading and prepare them for the discussion in the supporting lecture period. The second problem category, called the Graded Problems(GPs), that are thoroughly graded to assess the student's understanding. For a given assignment, the YDTs are worth 30% of the grade and the GPs are worth the remaining 70%.
